Published during the golden age of pulp magazines, Short Stories brought readers Westerns, mysteries and adventure fiction from around the world. Edited by D. McIlwraith and published by Short Stories, Inc., this 160-page issue featured Part I of Gordon Ray Young’s four-part serial “Trouble Rides Double,” along with Gordon Keyne’s “Victory Flag,” Ray Nafziger’s “The Manhattan Scalp Murders” and additional short fiction.

E. Franklin Wittmack’s cover illustration centers a hard-riding cowboy and dark horse splashing through a shallow river as a vast red sun descends behind the canyon landscape. The oversized blue Short Stories masthead, paired American flags and restrained palette of red, blue, brown and cream give the image the bold scale and direct storytelling associated with classic wartime pulp illustration.
