Richard Dix stars as Joaquin Murrieta, a carefree California landowner drawn into outlaw heroism, in the 1927 silent romance The Gay Defender.

Released by Paramount Famous Lasky Corp. on December 10, 1927, The Gay Defender was directed by Gregory La Cava and starred Richard Dix opposite Thelma Todd, with Fred Kohler as the villainous Jake Hamby. The seven-reel silent feature was photographed by Edward Cronjager and based on a story by Grover Jones.

Set in California, the story follows Joaquin Murrieta, son of a Spanish land baron, who falls in love with Ruth Ainsworth. After Jake Hamby frames him for murder and seizes control of the region’s gold lands, Joaquin becomes a fugitive and defender of the people, fighting to rescue Ruth and avenge his family.

This reproduction is prepared from a restored, high-resolution scan of an original theater advertising slide. The artwork has been carefully cleaned and color-balanced while retaining the hand-colored appearance, printed texture, softened colors and period character of the source. It is centered within a warm cream border for a presentation that complements the aged artwork.
