Published during the golden age of pulp magazines, War Novels brought readers action and adventure fiction shaped by World War I battlefields, military units and soldiers under fire. This 128-page issue was published by Dell Publishing Co. and featured Jay J. Kalez’s “The Battalion of Death.”

The cover illustration places the viewer directly in the action: a stern cavalry officer leans forward on a powerful chestnut horse while flames and smoke rise behind him and a wounded soldier reaches upward from the foreground. The oversized red War Novels masthead, bright yellow bursts and deep green uniforms give the composition the urgency and theatrical impact associated with classic war-pulp illustration.
